Ballet gets unbound, a cafe is spritzed and ladybugs are sprung
Charlie's Three for the Week in Charleston, 7/15 - 7/21
Founder’s Note: I wish I could take credit for the stellar job that intern Charlie Hastings is doing this summer scouring Charleston’s many offerings to select meaningful, enjoyable cultural experiences. But the credit goes to Charlie alone. While I backseat edit from across the pond, here’s another terrific roundup. Take it away, Charlie.
Hello again! Charlie here. The intern, remember? Maybe you don’t. Last I saw you was before the Fourth of July (and hopefully you kept all your fingers). Maura has again called me away from my busy life of sleeping, procrastinating and stressing to bring you lovely people the culmination of our city’s culture (at least, what it is this week). I have to admit, being new to this whole curation thing, it’s hard to nail down events everyone can enjoy. But, then again, who doesn’t like dancing, ladybugs and free stuff? I know I do. So, until next time, here is what our great city can give to you.
See two Southern ballet companies converge in one uplifting evening
Capers Hall, The Citadel, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, Fri., July 19, 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Dance is a delicate art, and ballet, even more so. Charleston-resident Crystal Wellman’s local ballet company, Unbound Ballet Project, promises to show just why in their upcoming collaboration with Styx the Company, the nationally recognized troupe from Miami. The dance groups will perform an evening of two original ballets for audiences in the new, state-of-the-art auditorium at Capers Hall on the campus of The Citadel. Styx will perform The Teller, a ballet by Brianna Campbell. Unbound will perform a ballet written by Wellman herself. The night will include several guest acts at both shows to provide a mixture of talent hard to find anywhere else. Admission is $25.

Celebrate The Black Door Cafe’s birthday by getting a gift or two
The Mills House, 115 Meeting Street, Charleston, Fri., July 19, starting at 8 a.m.

Plenty of times we have endured the stress of throwing someone else’s birthday party or being forced to pay out our life savings because a friend wanted to go to Vegas and make it everyone else’s problem. It’s about time birthdays were fun again. Let The Black Door Cafe spoil you with a full day’s schedule of food, coffee and raffles in collaboration with several downtown favorites.
From 8 - 11 a.m., start with complimentary coffee from La Colombe. Follow that up with bouquet building with Sweet Jessamine Flower Truck, who will be there from 10 a.m. -12 noon (with the first 50 visitors to receive their bouquet free). Then enjoy complimentary treats from Saffron Bakery from 12 - 3 p.m. Once happy hour is on the horizon, visitors can expect complimentary Aperol Spritzes from an Aperol-operated truck, up and serving from 3 - 7 p.m. Also on offer that day are free gelato, drip coffee and raffles for Cafe merchandise. Sounds like a decent party to me.
Down on your luck? Ladybug Day will fix that.
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, 3550 Ashley River Road, Charleston, Sun., July 21, 1 - 4 p.m.
Spend your Sunday outdoors and bring the family along to witness and participate in Magnolia Plantation and Gardens’ annual ladybug release. These luck-bringing bugs are critical to Magnolia’s ecosystem, as they eat many pests detrimental to flowers and gardens. Coupled with the release, Magnolia will host crafts, games, snacks, live music and interactive wildlife encounters for all to enjoy. Kids are encouraged to wear a ladybug costume. Tickets are included with regular admission.
