Lowcountry gardens are calling. Whether you parse plots with a horticultural pro, sip and stroll through the grounds of Drayton Hall or go native at a plant festival at Old Santee Canal Park, green spaces in the month of May beckon. Here are a few phenomenal happenings to make the most of the area’s uplifting landscapes.
Glean pro tips on a thoughtful garden

The Charleston Horticultural Society presents the final lecture in its 2024 series, which features Leslie Harris on “Thoughtful Gardening: How to combine sustainability with beauty in the garden.” The renowned expert is the host of the gardening podcast “Into the Garden with Leslie,” which aims to make gardening more accessible to all. Listen to her podcast here. The event is free for Charleston Horticultural Society members and $20 at the door for all others.

Sip, stroll and savor sonatas at Drayton Hall
Drayton Hall, 3380 Ashley River Rd., Charleston, Sat., May 11, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Attend an outdoor Charleston food and wine event on the historic grounds of Drayton Hall featuring the artists of Charleston Opera Theater in an intimate concert of songs by your favorite composers. Enjoy wine and local brews while walking the grounds and learn about the historic happenings on the landscape. Guests will also receive a complimentary wine glass, or koozie, to take home.

Make for Moncks Corner during the Native Plant Festival
Old Santee Canal Park, 900 Stoney Landing Road in Moncks Corner, Sat., May 11, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m
Go native during a festival featuring a giant plant sale, abundant local vendors and a guided plant walk. Native plants will be available for purchase with nursery representatives and Master Gardeners on hand to answer all your plant questions. The festival will also include music by Charleston Hot Shots, Lola's Lumpia food truck, information tables from several local and state organizations and more. Among the programs is “Indigo and Eliza Lucas Pinckney,” a live theatrical performance by Christy Pleasant at 9:30 a.m., accompanied also by a short film and talk-back. Come support the park and learn about the diversity of native plants in South Carolina.

OHM Radio 96.3 FM, Charleston’s nonprofit radio station, continues to embrace its community through music and open exchange.
